GOPALGANJ, Dec 31: An intermediate-level student in the district has become self-reliant through quail farming, turning his initiative into a source of inspiration for others in his area.
BM Sagar, a resident of Ghoradair Village under Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, is currently a second-year intermediate student. While his family advised him to go abroad, Sagar chose to pursue his own venture. Two years ago, he started a small farm with 500 quails. Today, he sells around 10,000 birds every month, earning nearly Tk 50,000 after expenses.
Initially, Sagar tried poultry farming but did not achieve expected results. After researching alternatives, he learned about quail farming, which requires less space, lower investment, and yields quicker profits. He faced challenges in feed management, disease control, and marketing, but gradually overcame them through patience and hard work.
Sagar said each quail brings a net profit of Tk 7 to 10. Even after paying workers' wages and covering feed and other costs, he earns about Tk 50,000 monthly. As a student, this income has made him financially independent.
In addition to selling birds, Sagar earns extra from eggs. His farm is equipped with an incubator that hatches about 2,000 chicks weekly. He keeps some for his own farm and sells the rest to other farmers, further increasing his income.
"This is a profitable business," Sagar said. "Unemployed youths who are seeking jobs or planning to go abroad can become entrepreneurs through quail farming. I was afraid at first, but I tried and succeeded."
His success has already inspired several young people in the area, who are seeking his advice to start their own farms. Locals say his initiative proves that with proper planning and effort, successful entrepreneurship is possible even from rural settings.
District Livestock Officer Gobinda Chandra Sarker said, quail farming is a promising sector. "We encourage unemployed youths to become entrepreneurs like Sagar. The livestock department will provide training, guidance, and necessary support," he said.
