Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday said he had personally delivered a condolence letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

In a Facebook post made after his meeting with Tarique Rahman at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Jaishankar said he met the BNP acting chairman shortly after arriving in Dhaka and expressed sympathy on behalf of the Government and people of India.

“I met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia, and delivered a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I conveyed our deep condolences,” Jaishankar wrote.

The Indian foreign minister added that he believes Khaleda Zia’s vision and values will continue to guide the development of India–Bangladesh partnership in the future.

Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday on a brief visit to pay his final respects to the late BNP chairperson and three-time former prime minister.

He was scheduled to leave the capital later in the day.

Notably, S. Jaishankar is the first Indian minister to visit Bangladesh since the fall of Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
