Four individuals, including two outsiders and a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist, were arrested while preparing to consume cannabis on the rooftop of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall (proposed Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall) at Dhaka University (DU) early Friday.

The arrested were identified as Abdullah Al Noman, from the 2019–20 session of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, and Tanbin Ahmed, also known as Ahmed Anim, a 2023–24 session student of the Economics Department. Tanbin Ahmed is an activist of the Bijay Ekattor Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. The two outsiders were identified as Samiul and Rakib.

According to sources, Hall Union Vice-President (VP) Muslimur Rahman and Assistant General Secretary (AGS) Mushfiq Tajwar Mahi, along with other students, went to the rooftop around 2:00 AM after receiving information about suspected drug-related activities. They allegedly found the group making preparations to consume cannabis and immediately informed the university proctorial team.

Upon arrival, the proctorial team detained the individuals and recovered tobacco leaves, hemp and a smoking device from their possession.

One of the outsiders, Samiul, told reporters that he and Rakib had come to Dhanmondi for work and later entered the hall. He claimed they went to the rooftop after he felt unwell.

Tanbin Ahmed initially denied possessing the substances but later admitted involvement during questioning.

A member of the DU proctorial team, Ripon, said that outsiders are typically handed over to the police, while students face disciplinary measures under university rules. He added that no final decision had yet been taken.

DU Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed said that university would take necessary action against the students in line with existing regulations.
