Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has initiated a month-long campaign to ensure a ‘Yes’ victory in the upcoming national referendum.
Announced at a press conference on Wednesday, the campaign features 15 diverse programmes aimed at boosting public awareness and engagement under the banner “Seal ‘Yes’, secure a safe Bangladesh.”
DUCSU Vice President (VP) and Islami Chattra Shibir leader Abu Shadik Kayem outlined the initiatives, which include direct outreach, online campaigns, debates, seminars on state reforms, and creative activities like street plays and poetry publications. These efforts will extend nationwide, targeting educational institutions to rally student support.
Shadik emphasised the historical significance of the referendum, linking it to the July mass uprising's spirit of reforming state structures and fostering a discrimination-free society.
He urged citizens to participate actively, framing the vote as a responsibility to honour the sacrifices of the July martyrs.
He argued that under current governance, public participation in decision-making has been stifled. A successful ‘Yes’ vote would facilitate the implementation of the July Charter, ensuring a balanced distribution of power and the independence of constitutional institutions.
Key proposals include limiting prime ministerial terms, enhancing transparency in recruitment, and recognising internet access as a fundamental right.
DUCSU has called for unity among various political parties, student organisations, and civil society members to create a robust movement in support of the ‘Yes’ vote.
