Following various allegations, Rajshahi University (RU) has suspended three teachers, cancelled the studentship of two students, and expelled three others. The decisions were taken at the university's 544th Syndicate meeting held on Tuesday.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday night and signed by Prof Dr Md Akhtar Hossain Majumder, Administrator of the Public Relations Office, "Associate Prof Dr Anik Krishna Karmakar of the Department of Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering has been suspended for three years and barred from all examination-related duties for 10 years.
In addition, Prof Dr Prabhash Kumar Karmakar of the Statistics Department and Associate Prof Mohammad Hedayet Ullah of the Finance Department have been suspended."
The press release further states that the studentship of two students has been cancelled, one student has been permanently expelled, and two others have been expelled for one year. All decisions taken at the Syndicate meeting on December 2 came into effect on that date.
Asked whether Dr Prabhash and Hedayet Ullah have been permanently dismissed, the PR Office Administrator said, "It is too early to call it permanent or temporary. A new investigation committee will be formed, and the final decision will depend on the committee's report."
Regarding the decision not to disclose the names of the students, he said, "For specific reasons, the students' names are not being published. However, the matter is related to an incident in the Finance Department."
