EC declares nomination papers of 1,896 aspirants valid

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday declared as valid,  nomination papers of 1,896 candidates of 27 political parties and an unspecified number of independent aspirants.

It said that 347 aspirants withdrew their candidature on Sunday, the last day.
EC Secretary Jahangir Alam said at a press conference that, out of 2,716 aspirants who had filed their nomination papers, nomination papers of 731 aspirants were scrapped, 560 of them appealed for review and on review the papers of 286 aspirants were validated while appeals of 274 were rejected.

Returning officers will allot polls symbols to the candidates today (Monday).

The candidates can start their election campaigns today (Monday).

Jatiya Party (JP) Co-Chairpersons Salma Islam and Kazi Firoz Rashid withdrew their candidature from Dhaka-17 and Dhaka-6 respectively.

However, Salma will contest from  Dhaka-1 seat as a JP candidate.

Farhana Sayeed, wife of former Dhaka South City  Mayor Sayeed Khokon, withdrew her candidature  as an independent candidate from Dhaka-6.

Sayeed Khokon is Awami League candidate in this seat.

Ruling Awami League withdrew its candidate Habib Hasan from  Dhaka-18 and left it for Sharifa Quader,MP, and wife of Jatiya Party President GM Quader.

Independent candidate of Sylhet-1, Misbah Uddin Siraj, former central organizing secretary of Awami League, withdrew his candidature in favour of  Awami Leagues candidate Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.
