Three heavyweight candidates moved the High Court on Sunday by filing three separate writ petitions challenging the Election Commissions (EC) decision to cancel their candidature.

Among the three, two Awami League aspirants Shammi Ahmed in Barisal-4 seat, Shamim Haque in Faridupur-3 seat and independent candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah in Barisal-5 seat, have filed separate writ petitions in the High Court (HC) to get back their candidature in the 12th national elections scheduled to be held on January 7.

Two Awami League aspirants Shammi Ahmed and Shamim Haque filed their writ petitions before the High Court bench of Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice SM Moniruzzaman while the other Sadiq Abdullah filed his writ before a bench consisting of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah.

In the appeal hearing, the EC on Friday declared invalid the candidacy of two Awami League aspirants Shammi Ahmed, Shamim Haque and independent candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah in Barisal-5 seat, on grounds of having dual citizenship.

The Election Commission cancelled the nomination papers of these three candidates who were discussed on the dual citizenship issue.
