AMATALI, BARGUNA, Jan 10: A man was killed on Saturday morning while trying to stop a land dispute between two brothers in Uttar Taktabunia Village of Haldia union in Amatali Upazila of Barguna.

The deceased, Jahirul Islam Sikdar, 40, was stabbed in the left chest in front of his home around 11:30am.
According to police and local sources, the dispute had been ongoing for 25-30 years between brothers Monsur Sikdar, 65, and Farid Sikdar over 26 percent (8 katha) of ancestral land. Multiple arbitration (shalish) meetings were held previously, but no resolution was reached. On Saturday, Monsur allegedly chased Farid with a knife. When Jahirul intervened, Monsur stabbed him, leaving him critically injured. Relatives rushed Jahirul to Amatali Upazila Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Amatali police acting officer-in-charge Jahangir Hossain said Monsur Sikdar was arrested along with the knife used in the murder, and his wife Shefali Begum was brought in for questioning. The body was sent to Barguna General Hospital for postmortem, and a murder case is being prepared.

Local BNP leader and former Haldia union convener Limon Hawladar said the longstanding dispute over the land could not be resolved despite repeated attempts. Relatives of the deceased demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators.
