Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman has paid tribute to the first martyr of July Revolution, Shaheed Abu Sayeed, on Friday evening.
He arrived at Babonpur village in Pirganj around 6:20 PM, pausing his journey toward a major electoral rally in Rangpur to honor the martyr whose death became a catalyst for the national movement.
Accompanied by senior party leaders, the BNP Chairman offered prayers (ziarat) at the graveside and later met with the bereaved family members.
During the visit, Tarique expressed his profound respect for Abu Sayed’s courage and sacrifice, offering condolences to the martyr’s father, Makbul Hossain.
The father has reiterated his demand for a fair trial and justice for the killing of his son, who was shot by police in broad daylight.
Abu Sayed, a student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University and a key coordinator of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was killed on July 16, 2024. The footage of him standing unarmed with his arms spread wide before being shot became the defining image of the revolution that eventually led to a change in governance.
Prominent leaders, including Rangpur District BNP Convener and Rangpur-6 candidate Saiful Islam, were present during the visit.
