A senior physician at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) has been relieved of his duties following a misconduct during a visit by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Abu Jafor.
Dr Dhandeb Barman, in charge of the hospital’s casualty operation theatre, has also been served a show cause notice and must respond within 24 hours.
The decision was issued on Saturday night through an official letter signed by Hospital Director Brig Gen Golam Ferdous.
Confirming the development, Assistant Director (Administration) Dr Mainuddin said Dr Barman engaged in an argument with the DG during a routine inspection, violating professional conduct and government service rules.
“He has been removed from his responsibilities and issued a show cause notice. Further legal action will be taken after reviewing his explanation,” he said.
The incident occurred around 10:30AM on Saturday when Prof Jafor visited the hospital prior to attending a programme at Mymensingh Medical College.
During the inspection, he questioned irregularities in the casualty operation theatre, which led to a heated exchange with Dr Barman.
The DG also questioned how the doctor treats patients if he behaves that way with senior officials.
The situation drew in senior officials, including Hospital Director Brig Gen Md Golam Ferdous, who apologised to the DG and noted that the doctor usually speaks softly and respectfully.
Staff attempted to persuade Dr Barman to apologise, but Prof Jafor dismissed, saying the doctor was “unfit for the hospital”.
The DG departed shortly afterward, and the hospital administration moved to relieve Dr Barman of his duties pending the outcome of the inquiry.
