Five killed, 20 injured in road mishaps

Five people were killed and at least 20 others injured in separate road accidents in three districts - Barishal, Mymensingh and Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday.
BARISHAL: Three people were killed and at least 20 others injured in two separate road accidents in Wazirpur and Babuganj upazilas of the district on Wednesday.
In Wazirpur Upazila, a Barishal-bound bus of Chaklader Paribahan from Jashore ran over a pedestrian near Sanuhar Bus Stand area at around 1 pm and overturned into a roadside ditch after losing its control over the steering, which left the pedestrian and a passenger of the bus dead on the spot and 14 others critically injured.
Of the deceased, one was identified as Sumon Sarder, 15, while another remained unidentified.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Wazirpur Police Station (PS) Md Jafor Ahmed confirmed the deaths of two people, adding that the bus driver managed to flee the scene and legal actions were being taken in this regard.
In Babuganj Upazila, a former union parishad (UP) chairman was killed and six others were injured when a shallow-engine-run three-wheeler lost control over the steering of the vehicle and hit a roadside pillar.
The deceased was identified as Md Sayedur Rahman, 75, a former chairman of Koyaria UP under Kalkini Upazila in Madaripur district. He was a resident of Dakshin Ramarpole area in Koyaria Union.
Babuganj Fire Service Station official Zahidul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
GAFARGAON, MYMENSINGH: A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident in Gafargaon Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The accident took place at noon on the Gafargaon-Bhaluka highway in front of Dakshin Puthuria Government Primary School of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Jahid Hasan, 23, son of Borhan Uddin, a resident of Khodaboxpur Village under Joshra Union in the upazila. He was a student of local Altaf Hossain Golondaz Degree College.
Quoting locals, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Gafargaon PS Khandaker Al-Mamun said a CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction hit Jahids motorcycle in front of Dakshin Puthuria Government Primary School at noon, leaving him dead on the spot.
Being informed, police rushed to the scene and recovered the body, the SI added.
Gafargaon PS OC Mohammad Shahinuzzaman confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
BIJOYNAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA: A passenger of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was killed and another injured in a road accident in Bijoynagar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The accident took place in Shashai area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Budhanti Union of the upazila at around 11 am.
The deceased was identified as Joynal Mia, 26, son of Mahtab Ali, a resident of Ananda Village in the upazila.
Police and local sources said a pickup van coming from the opposite direction hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Shashai area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Budhanti Union at around 11 am, leaving Joynal Mia dead on the spot and another passenger seriously injured.
Being informed, police recovered the body.
However, the law enforcers have seized the pickup van, but its driver and his helper managed to flee the scene.
Khantihata Highway PS OC Molla Salauddin confirmed the incident.
