Separate courts on Thursday sentenced seven people to life-term imprisonment in different drugs cases in two districts - Sirajganj and Narail.
SIRAJGANJ: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced three people to life-term imprisonment in a case under the Narcotics Control Act filed in 2020.
Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Abul Bashar Mia handed down the verdict.
The condemned convicts are: Shariful Islam, 30, hails from Banshtalipara Village under Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi; and Billal Hossain, 26, and Hasan Ali, 20, residents of Ali Nagar area in Chapainawabganj District Town.
The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each, and in default of payment, they have to suffer one more year of simple imprisonment.
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) of the court Jebunnesa confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-12), acting on a tip-off, arrested truck driver Shariful and his two associates along with 300 grams of heroin from in front of Bismillah Hotel on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway under Salanga Police Station (PS) area of the district on December 6, 2020.  
RAB-12 Deputy Assistant Director Selim Parvez, being the plaintiff, lodged a case under the Narcotics Control Act with Salanga PS in this regard.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court, and following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Thursday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.  
NARAIL: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced four people to life-term imprisonment in a drug case filed in 2014.
At the same time, the court also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each, and in default, they will have to suffer two more months in jail.
Narail Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Muhammad Akram Hossain handed down the verdict in the afternoon.
The convicts are: Sohel Rana, 39, hails from Purba Sonapur Village under Raipur Upazila in Laxmipur, Rabiul Islam, 50, from Purbachanpara Village under Jashore Sadar Upazila, Sabuj Hossain, 30, from Daitla Mor area, and Tarek Aziz, 35, from the same area.
Among the convicted, Rabiul Islam and Sabuj Hossain were present in the court when the verdict was announced while Sohel Rana and Tarek Aziz were absconding.
APP of the court Sardar Mahbubur Rahman said that on April 18, 2014, a pickup van was searched on the east side of Sitarampur Bridge on the Narail-Jashore road, and after interrogating Sohel, Rabiul and Sabuj, 223 bottles of phensedyl were recovered from the engine cover of the vehicle.
In this incident, a case was filed under the Narcotics Act with Narail Sadar PS.
Police, later, submitted the charge-sheet to the court against the four, and following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Thursday.
