Thrust on building capacity of flood volunteers to help reduce loss of life

GAIBANDHA, Apr 27: Speakers at a function in the district on Thursday underscored the need for building up capacity of flood volunteers to reduce losses of life and properties during emergencies.  
They said, "Geographically, Fulchhari Upazila is located in flood-prone area; that is why, most portions of the upazila experiences flood every year, causing untold sufferings, loss of life and damage of crops, and other properties. So, the flood volunteers can play responsible role in reducing the loss of life and properties if they are trained up properly".
They made the comments while addressing a view-exchange meeting on project experience. The meeting was held in the conference room of Fulchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) office in the afternoon.
Friendship, a leading NGO of the country, arranged the function under Formation and Capacity Building Flood Volunteers Project, funded by Luxembourg, with UNO Jagatbanbhu Mondal in the chair.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Mintu Miah, Upazila Rural Development Officer Sohel Rana, Sub-Assistant Engineer Abdul Hadi, Assistant Programmer Kazal Miah and Fulchhari Union Chairman Azharul Hannan, and Journalist Shah Alam Jadu spoke at the meeting, among others.
Speakers also emphasized having more flood volunteers to save flood victims from the devastation during emergencies.
UNO Jagatbandhu Mondal urged the flood volunteers to be more serious and dedicated to standing beside the flood victims aimed at reducing the loss of life and properties during the emergencies.
Earlier, the flood volunteers pointed out their obstacles and problems at the meeting in performing their duties during flood times.
Project officials concerned listed to them and assured them of solving the obstacles and problems they are facing as early as possible.
Many recommendations made by participants were also adopted at the open discussion session.
