Man dies of Nipah virus in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Jan 31: A shopkeeper died of Nipah virus in Sadar Upazila of the district early Sunday, after 15 days of consuming date juice.

The deceased was identified as Md Babul Hossain, 35, son of Md Mainuddin, a resident of Manta Village in the upazila.
Quoting locals, Putail Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Mahidur Rahman said, "Babul fell ill after consuming date juice 15 days back and taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Nipah Virus.

Later on, Babul was shifted to Dhanmondi Popular Hospital in Dhaka as his condition deteriorated, where he died early Sunday while undergoing treatment, the UP chairman added.

Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Md Lutfar Rahman confirmed the matter.

Earlier on January 16, one Lutfar Rahman, 27, from a nearby village was said to have also died from the virus after consuming date juice.

However, the Sadar Upazila health and family planning officer said they have no official confirmation of Nipah virus in Lutfors case.
