Fourth phase of flood has damaged all the cultivated paddy plant of farmers Abdus Soban, 60, and Noor Islam, 55, residents of Purbodhoniram village under Phulbari upazila in Kurigram district. Like them, others farmers in the upazila are also worried about their upcoming days as they already borrowed money to cultivate Aman paddy in their fields.
Expressing frustration over damage of crops in the field, farmer Abdus Sobhan on Sunday said, “Brother, I don't know how to express my sorrows. Not the first or second, this is the third time that flood destroyed the paddy in my field."
Taking a long breath he further said, “Ki kamu bahe?(What will I eat?)”
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension upazila office, fourth phase of flood damaged 1,600 hectares of Aman paddy fields at five unions under the upazila.
While visiting the paddy fields at Purbodhoniram and Pashichim Dhoniram villages under Borobhita UP and Prankrishna village under Phulbari UP at noon, our representative found that flood destroyed hundreds bighas of paddy fields in that areas.
Farmer Adul Mazid of Borobhita UP said if they not get assistance from the government it will be tough for them to get relief from the burden of borrow money.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Mahbubur Rashid said the Aman paddy was cultivated on 11,720 hectares of lands in the upazila this season but flood damaged 1,600 hectares of crops in the farmlands due to heavy rain and upstream water.
