Pabna transport strike postponed till Monday

An indefinite strike, called by Pabna District Bus Malik-Sramik Oikya Parishad, to all routes in Pabna district from Thursday morning was postponed till Monday evening.

The strike called to press home their six-point demand was postponed following assurances from the Pabna district administration and Shahjadpur upazila administration.

The assurance was given at a meeting held at the Bera upazila's executive committee's meeting room on Thursday afternoon. The meeting was attended by the leaders of bus, trucks, coaches and minibus owners and workers, Pabna deputy commissioner, Shahjadpur upazila nirbahi officer, and Shahjadpur transport workers leaders. As the Shahjadpur transport owners abstained from attending the meeting, the transport leaders postponed their strike till Monday evening at the request of the deputy commissioner.

Earlier, the association president freedom fighter Habibur Rahman Habib said Pabna's transport workers often face extortion and harassment allegedly by members of the transport owners' association of Shajadpur upazila. They had also beaten the workers on various excuses.

On December 24, two workers of 'Pabna Express' were beaten. The association informed the matter to the authorities concerned but no result was found.

The association also held a press conference at the district press club's office on December 27 over the issue and gave the administration an ultimatum to resolve the matter within three days which ended on Wednesday, said the association president.

The association halted plying of all vehicles from 6am as no solution came out within this period, he added.

No vehicle has seen plying on the roads responding to the strike, causing immense sufferings to passengers, reports our correspondent.
