If you want to explore a place full of wonder and history at the same time, you need to visit Mainamati Ruins. It is a vast place full of historical background. It is said that this place was called "Rajar Bari" (King's Palace) and later called "Shalban Bihara". Local people call this place "Shalban Bihar".
Mainamati is located almost 8 miles away from the town of Cumilla. It is the home of one of the most important Buddhist archaeological sites in the region.  Mainamati is only 114 km from Dhaka city and very easy to go by road on the way to Chittagong.
Mainamati name has come from the name of the Ruler of Deva Dynasty. It was ruled by them during mid 7th to mid 8th century A D. This large square monastery is now buried under the ground but its structure is visible from the outside.

There are 115 cells and a dominant central shrine and a number of subsidiary shrines and many more rooms or chapels access through its monumental gateway on the north. It was not only a monument but also an administrative centre and university complex. This place is more than seven hundred years old!
Can you imagine yourself standing in the middle of a seven-hundred year old place! Here you will find a connection of life between you and the ancient Buddhist. All the valuable terracotta and statues are kept in the museum beside that place. You will need to buy tickets to enter both places. I spent more than 1 hour in the Museum as lots of things were kept nicely. Among the artefacts, the statues of God and Goddesses were the most attractive things of that museum.
While walking in the middle of the shrine, you will feel the presence of the ancient people through the walls and their ruins. I love to visit that place whenever I go to Comilla. I hope you will enjoy that place too if you are a lover of history and nature.

Some of the bus services are Upakule Royal, Tisha, Prime Service. This place is just a kilometer away from the Moynamoti War Cemetery. If you are not familiar with the cemetery, then consider the Cumilla Cantonment. From the cantonment gate, you can reach this place paying a rickshaw fare of Tk 10. If you come from Dhaka, then get down at the cantonment gate from the bus.
