World leaders greet PM on AL’s landslide polls victory


World leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Indian Premier Narendra Modi, today extended their heartfelt congratulations to Bangladesh Premier and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on securing her party’s absolute majority in the 11th parliamentary elections.

Other leaders who extended their greetings to the Bangladesh premier were Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli and Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering, BSS reports.

Besides, India’s West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb also phoned Bangladesh Premier and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first head of state or government who phoned Bangladesh Premier and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina today and extended his heartfelt congratulations to her on securing her party’s absolute majority in the 11th parliamentary elections.

“Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Zhang Zuo handed over the congratulatory messages of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganabhaban residence here this afternoon,” the press secretary told BSS.

While handing over congratulatory messages to the premier, Karim said, the Chinese ambassador highly appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership for development of Bangladesh and hoped that her Vision-2021 will be materialised and the country will be turned into a middle income country by 2021 under her dynamic leadership.

He also hoped that Bangladesh will be able to bring down poverty rate to zero soon due to the farsighted programmes of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Zhang Zuo expressed hope that the strategic and mutual cooperation between the two countries will continue.
The Chinese envoy paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, terming him as a great leader of the world.

The prime minister thanked the Chinese president and premier for congratulating her and appreciated continued support of Beijing for development of Bangladesh.

Describing China as a great friend of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina expects more investment from China during her next five-year tenure.

Bangabandhu’s younger daughter Sheikh Rehana, Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed Putul, PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman, Military Secretary Mia Mohammad Zainul Abedin and PMO Secretary Sajjadul Hassan were present on the occasion.

“The Indian premier phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at about 10:30 am and congratulated her, the Awami League and the people of Bangladesh on securing her party’s absolute majority in the national elections held on Sunday,” the press secretary said.

“The victory of the Awami League in the polls is a reflection of stunning development that Bangladesh attained under your dynamic leadership,” Modi said.

The Indian prime minister assured that his country will continue to support Bangladesh’s development efforts like the past, the press secretary said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also greeted Narendra Modi and the people of his country.

She thanked the Indian premier for making phone and said he is the first head of state or government who congratulated her after her party’s landslide victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

The press secretary said the Bhutanese King sent a message congratulating Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on securing her party’s absolute majority in the national elections held on Sunday.

Jigme Khesar expressed the hope that the relations between the two countries will be further strengthened during the next five-year tenure of the Bangladesh prime minister.

Ihsanul Karim said the Nepalese premier phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina this evening and congratulated her, the Awami League and the people of Bangladesh on securing her party’s absolute majority in the national elections held on Sunday.

During the telephonic conversation, he said, the two premiers reaffirmed that the two countries will work together for further bolstering bilateral relations and cooperation.

The press secretary said the Palestine president phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at about 6 pm and congratulated her, the Awami League and the people of Bangladesh on securing her party’s absolute majority in the national elections held on Sunday.

During the seven-minute conversation, he said, the prime minister also greeted president Mahmoud Abbas and the people of Palestine.

Sheikh Hasina reiterated that Bangladesh will continue its support to the cause of Palestine and will always stand by its people.

The Palestine president invited Sheikh Hasina to visit Palestine, the press secretary said, adding that the prime minister also reciprocated the invitation.

Ihsanul Karim said the Bhutanese premier phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at about 1:30 pm and congratulated her, the Awami League and the people of Bangladesh on securing her party’s absolute majority in the national elections held on Sunday.

During the telephonic conversation, he said, the two prime ministers expressed hope that the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries will be strengthened further in the days to come.

Governor of Meghalaya Tathagata Roy also congratulated Bangladesh Premier and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on securing her party’s absolute majority in the 11th parliamentary elections.
