Police recovered the hanging body of a private university student from a residence in the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Mahmudha Akter, also known as Jerin, 27. She was a student of the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB).

Officer-in-Charge of Bhatara Police Station, Md Imraul Haque, said on Thursday that Mahmudha had been living in a room of a house in Block C of the Bashundhara Residential Area. When fellow students in the adjacent room noticed that her door had been locked from the inside for a long time on Wednesday evening, they informed the Bhatara Police Station.

Police broke open the door and recovered her body. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf tied around her neck. Mahmudha had rented the room, while other students lived in the neighbouring room.

After completing legal formalities, police sent the body to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College for autopsy on Wednesday night. An unnatural death case has been filed with the Bhatara Police Station. Police said the exact cause of death will be known after receiving the autopsy report.
Quoting her classmates, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Abdul Wadud of Bhatara Police Station, said that Mahmudha had been suffering from depression and may have taken her own life.

Mahmudha’s home district is Noakhali, under Sonai Muri upazila. Her father’s name is Khorshed Ali.
