HOSSAINPUR, KISHOREGANJ, Jan 16: A bailey bridge built over a branch of the Brahmaputra River on the vital road connecting Hossainpur to Pagla, Gafargaon and Bhaluka has been severely damaged after an overloaded truck attempted to cross it.

Locals said the incident occurred recently when a heavy goods-laden truck passed over the bridge, causing a loud cracking sound. One side of the bridge reportedly sank, and several deck panels became dislodged. Since then, the structural weakness has become visible, raising fears that the bridge could collapse under further pressure.

Following the incident, local administration rushed to the spot and immediately ordered a halt to all vehicular and pedestrian movement across the bridge. Red flags and bamboo barricades were placed at both ends to block traffic.

Despite the ban, many residents-particularly from nearby char areas-were seen risking their lives to cross the bridge, citing the lack of alternative routes. The bridge is the main access point for villagers to reach Hossainpur bazaar for essential goods, healthcare, education, and daily work.

Local teacher Alauddin said, "This bailey bridge is a lifeline for char residents. Its damage has hit day labourers and working-class people the hardest. Alternative routes mean long detours, costing both time and money."

Hossainpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kazi Nahid Eva told reporters, "Considering public safety, we have urged everyone to avoid using the bridge. The matter has been reported to the Roads and Highways Department engineers, who are assessing the situation. Necessary steps will be taken urgently."

The disruption has already caused severe hardship for residents, with many forced to revert to unsafe crossings or delay essential travel. Authorities fear a major accident if the bridge collapses before repairs are made.
