BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday held a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, marking his first high-profile engagement in Bangladesh since returning to the country on December 25.

The courtesy call took place at Jamuna, the official residence of Prof Yunus.

Tarique Rahman left Jamuna for his Gulshan residence at around 9:10 PM after the meeting.

Earlier in the evening, Tarique arrived at Jamuna with his family at approximately 7:30 PM.

He had left the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan at 6:42 PM, briefly stopped at his residence and then departed for Jamuna with his family at 6:52 PM.

The two leaders last met in person on June 13 last year in London during Prof Yunus’ visit to the United Kingdom.

That meeting, held at Dorchester Hotel, took place when Tarique Rahman was serving as BNP’s acting chairman and was followed by a joint statement issued by representatives of both sides.

After spending 17 years in exile in the UK, Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25.

Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, he spoke with Prof Yunus over the phone while waiting at the VIP lounge.

They also had a brief interaction on December 31 during namaz-e-janaza of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Jatiya Sangsad complex, following her death on December 30.

Tarique Rahman was elected BNP chairman on January 9 through a unanimous decision of the party’s highest policymaking body, National Standing Committee.

Thursday’s meeting marked his first engagement with the Chief Adviser in his capacity as BNP chairman.
