The students of Government Titumir College have ended their indefinite hunger strike following an assurance from the government that steps will be taken within the next seven days regarding their demand to upgrade the college into a university.
The strike was called off on Monday (February 3) night in the presence of Nuruzzaman, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and Professor Shipra Rani Mondal, Principal of Govt. Titumir College.
During the event, the principal was seen offering a packet of mango juice to one of the fasting students to break their hunger strike.
During the gathering, students raised concerns about an upcoming final exam scheduled for the following day, which many protesting students were set to appear for. They demanded its postponement. However, the college principal clarified that the matter was beyond her jurisdiction.
The students also urged the Joint Secretary to provide a detailed roadmap within seven days for the transformation of the college into a university. In response, he assured them that the issue would be addressed.
Earlier, at approximately 3:30 PM, over a hundred students marched from the college gate towards Mohakhali. After blocking the roads, they moved to the railway tracks and blocked the train movement, demanding that their plea be met.
For several months, Titumir College students have been demonstrating for the university status, organizing protests, road and railway blockades, memorandum submissions, and class boycotts. In response, the Ministry of Education had formed a special committee to assess the feasibility of the demand. However, due to the lack of concrete progress, students escalated their movement, launching an indefinite hunger strike on Wednesday (January 29) to press for their demands.
