34 fishermen arrested for violating fishing ban in Meghna


A total of 34 fishermen were arrested in a drive and fined Tk 32,000 by mobile court for illegally fishing in the Meghna river in Lakshmipur.

About 50,000 meters of net, one pie net, five fence nets, six boats and approximately 40 kg of Jatka including various species of fish have been seized in the operation.
On Tuesday (April 2) morning, with the help of the district administration, the Department of Fisheries and the Mozu Chowdhuryhat River Police jointly conducted an operation in the Meghna River and arrested them. In the afternoon, District Administration Executive Magistrate Mujibur Rahman gave this verdict through a mobile court.

Seized fish were distributed to orphanages and the nets destroyed by fire.

District Fisheries Officer Aminul Islam said during March and April, hunting of all kinds of fish including Jatka is prohibited in the Meghna River, a sanctuary of Hilsa. The 34 fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing and fined by the mobile court.
