An alleged gold smuggler has been arrested with seven gold bars conducting search on board a bus in Khulna city.
Police recovered the gold bars from inside the shoes of Abu Kalam, 24.
He was arrested from a Satkhira-bound bus from Dhaka, belonging to Emad Paribahan, at Sachibunia crossing in Khulna City bypass area on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the route has been used for a long time to smuggle out gold from the country to India.
They said the person was arrested on the basis of a tip-off.
Khulna Metropolitan Police's deputy commissioner Mohammad Tajul Islam said Abu Kalam is a member of a gang involved in smuggling out gold to India. He was going to Satkhira from Dhaka by a passenger bus of Emad Paribahan. Receiving information, police put a check-post at Sachibunia area. Later, stopping the bus, police searched his body and found seven gold bars inside his shoes. The market value of the gold bars, weighing 738.50 grams, is Tk 70 lakh.
