2 killed in UPDF in-fighting in Khagrachhari

KHAGRACHHARI, Jan 24: Two activists of the United Peoples Democratic Front were killed in a reported gunfight between two of its factions at Durchhari village in Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Rabi Kumar Chakma, 65, and Shanto Chakma alias Bimol, 52. Rohintu Chakma alias Tipon was seriously injured during the gunfight.
United Peoples Democratic Fronts Prasit Khisa Group Khagrachhari district organizer Angya Marma confirmed their identities and said another activist Rohintu Chakma alias Tipon was missing after being injured in the incident.
He condemned the attack and also alleged that the shooting was carried out by the UPDF Democratic Front, a breakaway faction.
Meanwhile, the leaders of Democratic Front denied the allegation and said none of their members was involved in the killing.
Mahalchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin said police are yet to reach the spot as the area is remote. The actual reason behind the killing would be known after investigation, he added.
Additional Superintendent of Police in Khagrachhari district Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
