A man, who supports an independent candidate from Jhenaidah-2 constituency for the upcoming national elections, was injured in an assault allegedly by supporters of the Awami League-nominated candidate on Thursday.
The incident happened in Chartola area under Harinakundu upazila of the district in the morning.
Locals said Hafizur Rahman Tuku, a follower of independent candidate Naser Shahriar Jahedi Mahul, was going to his pond for some work in the morning. At that time, three people including Dulal, the supporters of UP chairman Shorafatdollah Jhontu, suddenly assaulted Tuku with lethal weapons, leaving him critically injured.
He was rescued and taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, and he is currently undergoing treatment there.
Tensions are now prevailing in that area after the incident.
Tipu Sultan, brother of the victim, said the men of Jhontu assaulted my brother only for supporting independent candidate Naser.
Meanwhile, chairman Jhontu said the people who assaulted Tuku were not his followers.
Md Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Harinakundu Police Station, said he rushed to the spot after receiving the information and deployed additional police personnel.
Legal action would be taken after receiving a written complaint, he added.
