Due to the depletion of an underground face (coal emission face), coal extraction has been stopped from Barapukuria mine in Dinajpur's Parvatipur upazila, the only productive coal mine in the country.
The coal mining remain halted since 6:00 pm, Tuesday.
As a result, the production of electricity has been reduced at Barapukuria 525-megawatt Thermal Power Plant keeping only a unit in operation, said the plant chief engineer Abu Bakar Siddique.
The mine sources said the coal reserves of face no 1113 was exhausted after pulling out 3,75,000 metric tons of coal from it. From now, they will extract coal from another new face which has 2,16,000 metric tons of coal in reserves. The process of installing production tools at face no 1412 is ongoing, removing them from face no 1113.
It will take nearly two months to go into production, said Barapukuria Coal Mining Company managing director engineer Saiful Islam.
