A stone-laden truck fell down breaking Maini Bailey Bridge at Dighinala in Khagrachhari on Tuesday morning.
Following the accident, movement of vehicles between Sajek and and Dighunala through Baghaichhari road has remained suspended.
The accident happened at about 10:30am, mounting sufferings for tourists who intended to return from Sajek.
It is learnt that at about 10:30am, when the drum truck carrying some 27 tonnes of stone reached at the last end of the bailey bridge suddenly collapsed and fell into the river along with the truck. However, none was injured in the accident. More than 50 motor vehicles got stranded on both sides of the bridge.
Meanwhile, only pickup vans are moving through alternative bridge, known as 'Thana Bazar Footover Bridge.'
Truck driver managed to flee soon after the accident.
Local said the truck was carrying stones as border road construction work is going on.
Sajek's Abakash Resort manager Md Nazmul Hasan said, "Some tourists came to Sajek this noon using alternative bridge."
Dighinala Fire Sevice sub-station officer Pankaj Barua said, "The truck fell down in the river due to overload. Our team is working to resume communication."
