Some four lakh marooned people of more than 300 char areas in Kurigram district have been facing immense sufferings as the overall flood situation has not yet improved. They have been facing various difficulties including lack of dry foods, pure drinking water, sanitation and shortage of cattle feed.

Water Development Board executive engineer Md Ariful Islam said the Brahmaputra River was flowing 73cm, 60cm above the danger levels at Chilmari and Nunkhawa points respectively in the last 24 hours on Sunday, while the Dharla River was flowing 45cm above the danger level at Setu point.

The list of marooned people on high lands, embankment areas and educational institutions is increasing day by day. People have taken shelter with their belongings and domestic animals in the shelters and high land areas.

Residents of Mashal, Baladoba, Pura and Char Jatrapur under Ulipur upazila said they built temporary shelters on the rooftops of houses and boats in a hope to back in normal life after the flood improves. But it is more than a month and there is no sign of any improvement here, they added.

They alleged that it has become tough to live with water around suffering from pure water, food, sleep, sanitation facility and many others.

While visiting the remote char areas, our correspondent found that most of the houses were left empty. Family members of those houses have taken shelter at the safe areas and two to three of them are guarding their houses riding on boats regularly.

Yasin Ali, a resident of Char Jatrapur, said he along with 10 other families were living in their houses during the flood in an alternative way but now it is almost impossible to survive there.

"My family members now take shelter on a high road. We are guarding our houses one after another maintaining schedule," he added.

The people who took shelters on the high land areas and shelter centers alleged that they are starving for a long period but not received any kind of relief and no UP member or chairman come to help them.

Md Ayub Ali Sarker, chairman of Jatrapur UP in Sadar upazila, said the allocation of relief in UP is insufficient than that of the demand.

Deputy Commissioner  Md Rezaul Karim said the government distributed 190 metric tons of rice, Tk 9 lakh in cash, Tk 2 lakh for baby food, Tk 4 lakh for fodder and 8,000 packets of dry foods among flood-hit people in nine upazials.
