Traffic on Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge-1 over the River Buriganga has been suspended as the bridge developed cracks.

The bridge in city's Postagola area developed cracks after it was hit by a BIWTA vessel while heading to rescue the sunken launch 'Morning Bird.

Sabuj Uddin Khan, additional chief engineer of Roads and Highways Division, said vehicular movement on the bridge has been suspended since Monday evening following breaches.

"Next steps will be taken after the visit by our experts on Tuesday," he added.

The BIWTA Chairman said, "The master of the rescue vessel was trying to reach the spot quickly. But, mistakenly the vessel hit the bridge that created cracks. But, it was not risky."

Munshiganj-bound launch 'Morning Bird' with over 100 passengers on board capsized in the river Buriganga at Sadarghat after being hit by another vessel 'Moyur-2' around 9:33am on Monday. So far, 32 bodies were recovered from the sunken launch.
