Govt forms committee to prevent rumors

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that the government has formed a high level 19-member committee to prevent any rumor and propaganda against the government’s development activities.

“There is a high level 19-member committee under the information ministry on rumor prevention and informing about the rumor. The committee takes actions as per the existing rules and regulations of the respective offices under the jurisdiction of the committee after exchanging information about the rumors,” he said, BSS reports.

The information minister revealed the information while replying to a written question made by treasury bench lawmaker Shamima Akter Khanam in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Besides, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) takes immediate actions to stop and remove the links from the social media on an emergency basis after detecting the rumors on the social sites, Dr Hasan said.

He went on saying that there is also an 11-member cell on preventing rumor and informing about this under the Press Information Department (PID), which is working to inform the media about government’s statement immediately after detecting rumors in social networking sites.

Apart from this, different public awareness programmes are being telecasted through the Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar about the harmful aspects of the rumors and propaganda against the government’s development activities, the information minister added.

Responding to another question made by treasury bench lawmaker M Abdul Latif, Dr Hasan said a powerful board is working to stop obscenity in films.

Besides, a task force in association with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in plain cloth is working across the country to remove obscenity in the films and prevent video piracy, he said, adding “Due to the government’s utmost efforts, a healthy trend is continuing in the film industry.”
