Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has been removed from IPL as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday released the cutter master from its squad after protests of severalhindugroups, including BJP leaders and activists, force BCCI to ask the franchise to do so.
Following an appeal from BCCI, KKR issued an official release in the afternoon confirming compliance: “Following BCCI’s
directive and after internal discussions, Mustafizur Rahman has been
released in accordance with all league regulations.”
The development comes just a day after Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)
announced its home international schedule, which includes a six-match
white-ball series against India; three ODIs and three T20Is, scheduled
for March 2026.
The series had originally been planned for 2025.
Prior to that, Bangladesh are set to participate in T20 World Cup in
India during February–March.
Earlier, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to a news agency ANI, stating, “Considering the recent developments and the overall situation, BCCI has directed KKR to release Bangladesh player Mustafizur Rahman. The franchise has also been informed that they will be allowed to sign a replacement if they wish.”
While BCCI has not officially specified the reason behind the directive, Indian media reports suggest that the decision follows criticism of KKR and its owner Shah Rukh Khan by certain political and religious leaders.
Mustafizur Rahman began his IPL career in 2016 and has previously represented Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings.
In 60 IPL matches, he has taken 65 wickets. KKR had signed him for INR 9.2 crore at the most recent auction, making him the only Bangladeshi cricketer selected by an IPL franchise ahead of 2026 season.
Currently, Mustafizur is playing for Rangpur Riders in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
