State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad has announced that a 31-kilometer stretch along the Korotoa River in Panchagarh will undergo riverbank protection work to prevent further erosion.

The project will include the installation of protective blocks along vulnerable riverbanks.

The minister made the announcement on Friday at 3:00 PM while inspecting areas near Moinamati Char from DC Park at Debiganj municipality in the district.

“River erosion in various parts of Panchagarh has damaged numerous homes and agricultural lands,” said the minister. “To protect these areas, blocks will be installed along the riverbanks as part of a sustainable plan. In addition, 25 kilometers of river dredging will be undertaken. Once implemented, the project will help reduce erosion and have a positive impact on agriculture.”

He also highlighted that, following the initiatives of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for canal excavation, the current government is working on river and canal management to increase food production and strengthen food security.

The minister further mentioned plans to develop Moinamati Char as a potential tourist destination, ensuring protection against erosion and creating an environment suitable for visitors.

He added, “Preparations are underway to begin the first phase of the project by mid-June.”

Officials present during the visit included Dr. Md. Sarfaraz Banda, Chief Engineer of Northern Region Water Development Board; Panchagarh District Executive Engineer Ashutosh Barman; Supervising Engineer of Thakurgaon Water Development Board Krishna Kamal Chandra Sarker; Debiganj Upazila Executive Officer Mahmudul Hasan and other officials from Water Development Board, local BNP leaders including General Secretary Abul Hossain, party activists and local residents.
