Bangladesh Navy Ship (BNS) 'Somudra Avijan' has left Chattogram port with 120 metric tons of relief, emergency medical supplies and humanitarian assistance for the earthquake-hit Myanmar.
The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) confirmed the information in a press release on Tuesday.
According to ISPR sources, Bangladesh Navy ship 'BNS Somudra Avijan' left Chattogram Port on Tuesday. The ship, led by Captain Mohammad Arif Hossain, set sail for Myanmar with about 120 tons of relief. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan inspected the ship and provided necessary directives to the members of the Armed Forces going to the shore.
ISPR release further mentioned that the ship is expected to reach Yangon port in Myanmar on April 11. Bangladesh will formally hand over the relief materials to the Myanmar government delegation there. This assistance program is being implemented under the supervision and patronage of the Armed Forces Division under the direction of Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, with the assistance of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the Armed Forces, Sena Kalyan Sangstha and Red Crescent, the relief materials include 77 tons of dry food, more than 9 tons of tents and usable clothes, 29 tons of pure drinking water, 4 tons of hygiene kits and about 1 ton of necessary medicines.
In the wake of 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand on March 28, the government of Bangladesh has already sent 31.5 tonnes of relief materials, rescue and medical assistance teams through army and air force transport aircraft in two phases.
This compassionate step of Bangladesh during the disaster period of neighboring Myanmar will further increase mutual trust and confidence between the two countries and further strengthen the friendly relations between two countries.
