Former International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor Tureen Afroz, has been placed on a four-day police remand in connection with an attempted murder case.
Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted the remand on Tuesday (April 8) following a hearing.
Earlier, the investigating officer from Uttara West Police Station had sought a 10-day remand.
Afroz was arrested Monday night from a residence in Uttara in connection with the alleged shooting of student activist Abdul Jabbar during a protest organized by Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on August 5. Jabbar was reportedly shot near the BNS Centre on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway and received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The case, filed on March 27, names 50 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and lists 100–150 unnamed accused. Afroz is named as the 30th accused in the case.
No defense lawyer appeared on Afroz’s behalf during the hearing. Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki represented the state.
Turin Afroz served as a prosecutor at International Crimes Tribunal from 2013 to November 2019. She was removed from her position after allegations of unauthorized contact with a convicted war criminal. In 2018, she sought nomination from the ruling Awami League to contest in the national elections.
