Youth sentenced to death for rape of schoolgirl in Rangpur

A Rangpur court on Thursday sentenced a young man to death for rape of a girl of Class six at Mithapukur upazila in the district in 2021.

Rangpur Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 judge Md Mostafa Kamal pronounced the verdict in presence of the convict in the afternoon.
The condemned convict is Lavlu Mia alias Lauyet, 23, of Jafarpur village of the upazila.

The court Public Prosecutor (PP) Rafiq Hasnain confirmed it.

According to the case statement, the girl was violated by Lavlu Mia on September 1, 2021. The girl's father Mansur Ali filed a case against Lavlu on September 3 being the plaintiff. Police arrested Lavlu after filing the case.

Meanwhile, Lavlu's parents went to the house of the girl, hurled abusive language to her and threatened to kill her. Even they continued to spread slanders in the name of the girl. Being unable to bear the pressure, the girl, at one stage, committed suicide swallowing poison around 9:00pm on September 25 of that year. Then she was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead.

In the incident, Sathi's father filed another case on September 30 accusing Lavlu's father Matiar Rahman and mother Lovely Begum of inciting his daughter to commit suicide which is still under trial.
