UP chairman arrested for 'buying votes' in Sirajganj


A Union Parishad (UP) chairman was arrested with Tk 94, 000 allegedly for buying votes for a chairman candidate in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj during the first phase of the 6th Upazila Parishad election held at 139 upazilas in the country Wednesday.

Arrestee Jahurul Islam is a supporter of chairman candidate Engineer Aminul Islam who is contesting the polls in Ink and Pen symbol.
Md Julhaz Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Sirajganj Detective Branch, said they arrested Jahurul with the Tk 94, 000 from outside Tamai Paschimpara Government Primary School centre after being informed that he was buying votes around 12pm.

Later, he was handed over to the concerned police station, he said.

Confirming the matter, Belkuchi police station OC Md Anisur Rahman said legal action will be taken.
