Use animal resources properly to alleviate poverty: DU Pro-VC Sitesh

A day-long international biannual conference themed "Transformation of Poverty through Improvement of Health and Innovative Utilization of Bio-Resources" was jointly organized by the Zoology Department of Dhaka University and the Zoological Society of Bangladesh (ZSB) on Friday.

The conference was held at universitys Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.

Presiding over the programme, DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar emphasised proper use of animal resources to alleviate poverty and build a developed and prosperous country.

He urged teachers, researchers, students and related parties to work together for innovations.

"Animal health protection is important to enrich the sector. Everyone should be more aware while using antibiotics," Prof Sitesh added.

Addressing the conference as chief guest, State Minister for Education Shamsun Nahar said that the government is taking and implementing various initiatives to meet the demand of non-vegetarians by enriching livestock.

"As a result of these initiatives, besides meeting the food demand in the country, peoples health has also improved," Shamsun Nahar said.

She noted that everyone needs to be aware to protect the wildlife and biodiversity.

Forest Conservator of Bangladesh Forest Department Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Fisheries Department Director General Syed Md Alamgir, Jahangirnagar University Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Md. Mostafa Feroz, DU Zoology Department Chairman Prof Shefali Begum, Fisheries Department Chairman Prof Mohammad Raknuzzaman and ZSB President Prof Hamida Khanam addressed the conference, among others.

Zoology Olympiad winners were awarded in the conference.

DU Zoology Department student Fairuz Humayara Etu became the champion at the graduate level and Rajshahi University Zoology Department student Nafsi Montainna became the runner-up.
