A cargo vessel, named 'MV Mou Moni' capsized in the Bay of Bengal in Hatiya of Noakhali district early Thursday (April 25) afternoon.
The incident happened near Bhasan Char, on the eastern side of Hatiya upazila.
Hatiya river police in-charge Md Mehedi Zaman confirmed that 12 sailors of the vessel went missing till filing this report on Thursday afternoon.
Talking to Daily Observer Online, Hatiya river police in-charge Md Mehedi Zaman said the sailors sought help calling on 999 while their vessel was sinking. "Then I received a call from 999. Along with the river police personnel, I tried my best to rescue the cargo vessel's sailors amid strong current of the sea. But, we were compelled to come back abandoning the rescue operation due to strong current in the sea. It could not be possible to rescue the missing sailors so far."
One Md Wahedul Islam, who represents the owner of the vessel, said over phone that the vessel was capsized due to inclement weather. The real reasons behind the capsize of the vessel could not be known.
