Lightning kills six in four districts

Six people including two women and a minor were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in four districts - Jhalakati, Khulna, Sunamganj and Moulvibazar, in four days.
JHALAKATI: Two women and a minor girl were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in Kathalia and Sadar upazilas of the district on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as Helena Begum, 40, a resident of Uttartal Gasia Village under Kathalia Upazila; and Minara Begum, 35, of Sekharhat Village, and Mahia Akter Isana, 11, of Panabalia Village under Sadar Upazila in the district.
According to local sources, thunderbolts struck on them while they went to field to bring cattle to the houses at around 10 am during the rain, which left all of the three critically injured.
Later on, local people rescued the injured and took them to different hospitals, where the on-duty doctors declared the trio dead.
The superintendent of police in Jhalakati confirmed the incidents, adding that necessary steps would be taken in these regards.
DUMURIA, KHULNA: A fisherman was killed by lightning strike in Dumuria Upazila of the district on Sunday morning.
The incident took place in a beel of Komalpur Village of Gutudia in the upazila at around 8:30 am.
The deceased was identified as Obaidullah Gazi, 29, son of Delwar Hossain, a resident of that village.
Obaidullahs cousin Abu Sufian said Obaidullah went to cut grass for his cattle at Kanaidanga Beel next to the house in the morning. At that time, thunderbolt struck him. He died on the spot.
SUNAMGANJ: A fisherman was killed by lightning strike in Dowarabazar Upazila of the district on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Sochindra Biswas, 35, son of Suresh Biswas, a resident of Vuzna Village under Surma Union in the upazila.
According to local sources, a thunderbolt struck on Sochindra while he was fishing in the Konskhai Haor at around 11 pm, which left him critically injured.
Locals then rescued him and took to Dowarabazar Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead by the on-duty doctor.
Officer-in-Charge of Dowarabazar Police Station Badrul Hossain confirmed the incident.
MOULVIBAZAR: A fisherman was killed by lightning strike in Barlekha Upazila of the district on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Ratan Moni Das, 40, son of late Nandalal Das, a resident of West Gangkul Village under the upazila.
According to local sources, a streak of lightning struck on Ratan while he was fishing in the Hakaluki Haor in the morning, which left him dead on the spot.
Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as per their request.
Dakshinbhagdakshin Union Parishad Member Sahedul Islam confirmed the incident.
