A 34-year-old woman and her teenage daughter apparently committed
suicide by jumping before a running train just after celebrating the girl's birthday on the rail track in
Jashore Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place around 3pm at Churamonkathi area in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as the mother Lucky Begum, 34, daughter of Moksed Ali, and her daughter Sumaiya Khatun Mim, 12, a sixth grader, hailed from Khulna. They both used to live in a rented house at Haibatpur village in the upazila.
Citing locals, it was known that Lucky got married for the second time as her first husband divorced her. But Lucky got divorced again by the second husband recently.
"She might have been committed suicide out of depression following theses incidents," they said.
Witnesses said, "Just before the incident, the mother celebrated her child's birthday cutting a cake and sitting on the railway track. At that time, when Chapainawabganj-bound ‘Mahananda Express’ train approached in front of them, they jumped before the moving train together. They both died on the spot."
Jashore Railway Police Station sub-inspector Monitosh said after being informed by locals, the law enforcers recovered the bodies from near Poltadanga Cremation ghat area and legal process were being underway.
An half of a bakery cake, a bag, and a mobile phone were recovered from the spot, he added.
