Sri Lanka posted 280 runs in their first innings despite losing five wickets for just 57 runs at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet on Friday.

Bangladesh managed 31 runs for three wickets at the end of day one of the first of the two-match Test series.

Bangladesh, with three seamers including debutant Nahid Rana and two spinners, won the toss and opted to bowl first inviting Sri Lanka to bat.

Khaled Ahmed emerged as the destructor claiming the wickets of the top three Lankan batters early on sending Nishan Madushka (2), Dimuth Karunaratne (17) and Kusal Mendis (16) back to the pavilion.

The quick dismissal of two veteran Sri Lankans, Angelo Mathews (5) and Dinesh Chandimal (9), put the visitors on the back foot before skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis began their partnership.

Sri Lanka went for lunch at 92 for five, but Dhananjaya and Kamindu started scoring briskly and remained unbeaten throughout the second session, adding 125 runs together from 27 overs. They forged a brilliant 202-run 6th wicket partnership with both of them reaching centuries as they left the field with 102 runs next to their names.

Debutant Nahid dismissed both set batters. Among the remaining batters, Prabath Jayasuriya (1), Vishwa Fernando (9), Kasun Rajitha (not out 4) and Lahiru Kumara (0) failed to contribute as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 280 runs. The Lankans lost the last five wickets adding just 21 runs.

Khaled and Rana claimed three wickets each for Bangladesh, while Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam shared one wicket each.

In reply, Bangladesh lost the wickets of Zakir Hasan (9), Najmul Hossain Shanto (5) and Mominul Haque Showrab (5). Mahmudul Hasan Joy and night watchman Taijul Islam remained unbeaten scoring nine and four runs respectively.

Fernando took two wickets for Sri Lanka and Rajitha picked up the rest.
