At least sixteen shops were burnt in a devastating fire at Uttara sector-11 kitchen market in the city early on Tuesday before fire fighters put out the blaze in their 40 minutes efforts, an official said.
"On information of fire around 2:05am, the firemen rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control. But, sixteen shops were burnt before the fire could be extinguished," Fire Service Media Officer Talha Bin Jashim said.
A total of nine fire fighting units from Uttara, Tongi, Kurmitola and Pallabi fire stations were engaged in dousing the fire, he added.
The fire destroyed a huge amount of goods but the extent of loss is yet to be ascertained, said Rozina Akhter, Duty Officer of Fire Services and Civil Defence Headquarters.
