Why good quality teachers training is imperative

Why good quality teachers training is imperative

Education is often regarded as the cornerstone of a nations development. Teachers stand at the core of the educational enterprise, occupying a central role in moulding the forthcoming generations. As the architects of knowledge transmission, teachers hold paramount importance in ensuring the quality of education. Therefore, properly trained teachers are essential in cultivating the skills and intellect needed to propel society forward. Thus, investing in the professional development of teachers is imperative for fostering a well-educated and prosperous future generation.

In our country, the scenario of teachers training differs significantly from professions like soldiers, doctors, or even drivers. While becoming proficient in these roles requires rigorous training, the teaching profession often lacks the structured support and standardized training programs seen in other fields. This absence of comprehensive training can hinder educators effectiveness and, consequently, impact students learning outcomes. Many unexpected incidents have been reported nationwide due to classes conducted by untrained and unprofessional teachers, ranging from the leaking of question papers to instances of students being bitten in class mercilessly, emotional harm inflicted upon students, negative comments made about students and their families during class, disregard for students self-respect, and unethical grading practices.

The current system of teacher training colleges exclusively catering to teachers from government institutions overlooks a significant portion of educators working in private schools, colleges, and madrasahs.  This exclusion means majority portion of teachers are left without access to formal training opportunities. As a result, many teachers are tasked with teaching students without the benefit of structured pedagogical instruction, potentially impacting the quality of education. Implementing inclusive teacher training programs that accommodate educators from both public and private sectors can contribute to raising the overall standard of education and nurturing a more competent teaching workforce.

Teacher specialized degrees like Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) have a limited scope in our country. Surprisingly, these degrees are not mandatory for becoming a teacher. This situation is akin to someone driving a car without proper training. The consequences could include inefficiency, lack of effectiveness in teaching methods, and ultimately, a negative impact on students learning outcomes.

A limited number of financially stable educational institutions arrange teachers training for professional development for the teachers of that particular institution, but this is a minority. The majority of institutions lack such opportunities. Consequently, teachers in these institutions often conduct classes without proper knowledge of teaching methods and professionalism.

The ramifications of inadequate training and professionalism reach far beyond mere academic setbacks. Instances of severe disciplinary measures, like physical punishment, not only violate students rights but also significantly affect their well-being. These harsh disciplinary actions foster an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, ultimately pushing students away from pursuing education altogether.

Now lets talk about professionalism. First of all, what is professionalism? Professionalism is the adherence to standards, behaviours, and qualities expected within a profession or workplace, including integrity, competence, respectfulness, and teamwork. In teaching, professionalism entails the behaviours, attitudes, and values teachers demonstrate in their role as educators, influencing interactions with students, colleagues, parents, and the community. Training offers opportunities to cultivate professionalism.

Taking adequate preparation for going to the class is professionalism. But a concerning trend among educators is the lack of adequate preparation before entering the classroom. Rather than approaching their teaching duties with diligence and dedication, many teachers seem to view their time in class as merely a means to pass the time rather than an opportunity to educate and inspire their students. Furthermore, some educators prioritize their personal interests, such as private tuition, over delivering quality lectures in the classroom. This diversion of focus not only undermines the educational experience of students but also erodes trust in the professionalism of teachers.

Teachers serve as role models for their students, influencing them consciously or subconsciously through their words, actions, and responsibilities. However, a significant portion of educators lacks a clear understanding of professionalism. This deficiency manifests in their appearance, demeanour, and conduct within the classroom. Many teachers fail to present themselves in a manner befitting their profession, neglecting to adhere to appropriate dress codes and standards of decorum. Consequently, they may inadvertently diminish the respect and admiration that students hold for them, undermining the potential positive impact they could have on their students development and growth.

Unfortunately, instances of unprofessional behaviour extend beyond the classroom, as some teachers openly smoke in front of their students. These actions not only set a negative example but also display a lack of consideration for the well-being and impressionability of those under their care. Moreover, situations where teachers send students to bring cigarettes for them not only blur boundaries but also foster an environment where inappropriate behaviours are normalized. The essence of professionalism seems lost in these scenarios. A teacher should embody qualities that command respect and admiration, serving as a beacon of knowledge, guidance, and integrity for their students and the community at large.

In summary, the significance of teacher training, ongoing professional development, and maintaining professionalism in the education sector cannot be overstated. Educators need structured training and continuous learning opportunities to excel in the classroom. Equal access to formal training is crucial for all educators to ensure quality education delivery. Professionalism in teaching is vital for creating a positive learning atmosphere and earning the trust of students and the community. By investing in these aspects, we empower educators to thrive and enhance the education system, ultimately shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
