20 injured in police-students clash at SUST


At least 20 students were injured as they engaged in clash with police at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet on Sunday.

The incident took place around 5:30 pm when the police went to free the teachers and officials, including the university vice-chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed, who was confined by the agitating students at IICT building on the campus.
Witnesses said a team, led by the university treasurer Md Anwarul Islam, went to meet with agitating studentsat 5:30 pm. At that time, the treasurer told the agitating students that “The vice-chancellor had fallen ill as he is confined inside. He has to be taken home.”

The agitating students then asked them to accept their demands, and later, engaged into an argument with the teachers.At one point of the altercation, police members attempted to enter into the IICT building to free the vice-chancellor. At that time the protesting students prevented the police from entering the building which led to clashes.

Police charged batons on protestors, on the other hand students started to throw brickbats at the police.

Later, though police kept quiet for a while but after sometime they hurled sound grenades towards protestors and dispersed them and freed the vice-chancellor.  

Sylhet Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Azbahar Ali Sheikh told media that police did not attack the students.

“Police fired sound grenades to disperse the protesting students. Police are currently on campus and the situation is under control.”
