People from all walks of life on Tuesday observed the 43rd death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on the Dhaka University campus and elsewhere in the country  with due respect.

The Rebel poet breathed his last on August 29, 1976.  The poet was buried beside Dhaka University (DU) central mosque as per his wish expressed in one of his poems.

Many political parties and socio-cultural and professional organizations chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day which began with a Quran recitation after Fazr prayers at the DU Central Mosque close to where the poet lies in eternal rest.

Later at 7:15am, DU teachers, students and employees assembled in front of the Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture and brought out a procession on the campus led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman.
They walked up to the poet's grave, where they paid tribute by placing wreaths and offering a special prayer.

A discussion was also held at the university with the VC in the chair, and conducted by Bangla Department Chairman Prof Bismadeb Chowdhury.
While addressing the DU VC said, "Nazrul's powerful poems inspired people to fight against all kinds of odds and injustice and repression during the colonial rule while his songs and poems were also a great source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the country's Liberation War in 1971."
Nazrul researcher and National Prof Dr Rafiqul Islam, DU Teachers' Association (DUTA) President Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani and Chairperson of Music Department Tumpa Samaddar were also present on the occasion, among others.
