The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked depression.
According to the latest report, the system was centered over the southwestern and adjoining southeastern parts of the Bay of Bengal but has since moved northwestwards and gained strength.
By Tuesday afternoon, the depression was located over the southwestern Bay and the adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. Forecast models indicate that it may continue to move in a north-northwesterly direction over the next 24 hours, before shifting its course towards the north-northeast.
This information was confirmed in a special bulletin signed by meteorologist Shahana Sultana. The bulletin also included detailed weather forecasts for the next several days across various regions of Bangladesh.
According to the forecast issued for Tuesday, temporary gusty winds accompanied by lightning or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places in the divisions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet. Mild heatwaves are currently affecting areas including Faridpur, Madaripur, Jashore, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, Bandarban, and Rangamati, though some relief is expected in certain regions. Day and night temperatures across the country are expected to drop slightly.
For Wednesday, similar weather conditions are predicted with a possibility of isolated thundershowers in the same eight divisions. Temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
On Thursday, a wider spread of thundershowers is expected across most areas of all eight divisions. Slight decreases in both day and night temperatures are also anticipated.
The forecast for Friday suggests that many parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions may experience gusty winds and thunderstorms. Dhaka and Sylhet may also see isolated rainfall. While daytime temperatures are likely to remain stable, a slight increase in nighttime temperatures is expected.
By Saturday, sporadic thundershowers are likely in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, with a few locations in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram also experiencing similar weather. Both day and night temperatures are expected to rise slightly.
The Met Office continues to monitor the evolving depression over the Bay of Bengal, urging the public and relevant authorities to remain alert and prepared for sudden weather changes.
