3 killed in clashes in Khagrachari

Three people have been killed and several others injured in clashes in Khagrachari on Thursday (19 September).

The deceased was identified as Junan Chakma, 20, Dhananjay Chakma, 50 and Rubel, 30. 

They all succumbed to their injuries at Khagrachari Sadar Hospital on Thursday night.

Ahsan Habib Palash, deputy inspector general, Chattogram range, Bangladesh police, confirmed the matter. 

Among the deceased Dhananjay Chakma died around 10:00pm while Junan and Rubel died later part at the night. 

"At present, nine people are receiving treatment in the hospital and four people have been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for better treatment, said Ripple Bappi Chakma," a resident doctor of the hospital.  

Earlier, on Wednesday, a man named Md Mamun was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Khagrachhari. 

Following the death, Bangali students brought out a protest rally on Thursday. 

At one point, heated arguments broke out between the Bangalis and the indigenous people.

Clashes ensued and at one point, miscreants set fire to about 50 shops in Larma Square. Five people were injured in the incident.

Later at night, there were shootings in Narankhaiya area of Khagrachhari sadar.

At present, the patrolling of law enforcement along with the army has been strengthened in various parts of the district.
