The security was beefed up in Dighinala upzila of Khagrachhari on Friday, a day after over 50 shops and other establishments were set on fire during clashes following the death of a man named Md Mamum in a mob beating.
Earlier, on Thursday, miscreants set fire to the shops and establishments, mostly belonging to the ethnic minority community, at Larma Square and surrounding areas in the upazila centring the death of Mamun on suspicion that he stole a motorbike owned by an ethnic minority person.
Witnesses said local students brought out a procession from Dighinala Government College on Thursday afternoon demanding justice for Mamun, 30, who was allegedly lynched by members of a hill organisation on Wednesday.
When the procession was crossing the Larma Square, a chase and counter-chase occurred between the protesting students and the members of the hill organisation, leaving at least five injured.
The injured were admitted to Upazila Health Complex.
Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner Md Sahiduzzaman said that being informed, members of Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The Army and the BGB personnel have been deployed there to avoid any further untoward situation with the law enforcement agencies patrolling the area.
Officer-in-Charge of Dighinala police station Nurul Huq acknowledged the matter of arson on the Larma Square.
