At least 72 people went missing after 16 salt-laden trawlers capsized amid inclement weather in different coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal in Chattogram on Wednesday.
Titu Dutta, in-charge of Gahira Baro Auliya River Police, said a nor'wester that swept Anwara and Banshkhali coasts of the Bay of Bengal from morning to noon. A total of 16 trawlers trawlers sank during that time.
On information, the Coast Guard and River Police reached the spot and rescued 30 people, he added.
A boatman of the Baro Auliya trawler said that their trawler overturned and sank when a storm started in the morning while coming from Kutubdia. A few other trawlers also sank at that time.
He said as they were near the coast, they managed to swim ashore.
